Live updates from Glastonbury Festival 2022 as thousands descend on Worthy Farm amid thunderstorm warnings

The first day of Glastonbury Festival 2022 has arrived. There are queues in Somerset, with the long queues expected to enter Worthy Farm also forming on the site, but the delays are well managed – and not as bad as many feared .

Thousands of festival fans are trying to get to Pilton on a sunny and hot day, but train services have been reduced due to this week’s strike. This probably means more motorists on the roads.

The gates to the festival opened at 8 a.m. this morning (Wednesday June 22). Michael Eavis himself – wearing his trademark shorts – promised, as he usually does, that 2022 would be the best event yet by opening the doors.

Billie Eilish, Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar and Diana Ross headline the festival this year. Glastonbury returns after two cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Festival-goers will be heading to the Worthy Farm site this week from across the UK and around the world.

But severe travel disruptions are expected after nationwide train strikes began on Tuesday (June 21). Main lines from the South West, including trains to Castle Cary station, which is the main arrival point for festival-goers, are expected to be halted as people make the pilgrimage to Worthy Farm.

Latest weather in Glastonbury

The latest Met Office forecast predicts a risk of storms. While initial weather forecasters warn of heavy showers and thunder, there is currently hope that the run-up to the weekend will bring warmer conditions and hope for a Glastonbury scorcher.

Sadly, however, the BBC weather forecast for Pilton suggests light rain on Thursday evening (June 23), continuing through Friday morning (June 24). The weekend could be a mix of sunshine and showers.
