What is British Summer Time?

British Summer Time is the name given to the part of the year when clocks are one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (or UTC, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time). UTC is the primary standard by which the world regulates time.

In 1916, following the Summer Time Act of that year, British Summer Time was introduced for the first time. It was the idea of William Willett, a builder, who argued that clocks should go back in winter and go forward in spring in order to save energy.

Willett first presented his idea in a pamphlet called “The Waste of Daylight”, which was published in 1907. However, it was not until the outbreak of World War I that the British government put it implemented, in an attempt to increase wartime production.

However, the idea was not entirely original, and people had debated the merits of DST for many years before Willett came up with it. The Romans had their own daylight saving time system to help them use the day more efficiently.

When does British Summer Time start?

This year, British Summer Time will start on Sunday March 27 at 1am – when the clocks go forward. The clocks won’t go back until 2am on Sunday 27th October, which will mark the end of British Summer Time.
